By Jeremy, Oliver’s dad (NSW, August 2024)

Oliver’s story was first published by TSA in 2019 when Oliver was 7 years old. Oliver’s Dad Jeremy has kindly given us an update on their TSC journey. Oliver is now 12 years old, and is in his first year of high school.

Oliver completed primary school in a support unit and he has now transitioned to high school. He is again in a support unit, but this time with just 5 other peers. Oliver enjoys the variety of activities that high school offers, especially the community access days.

His care team has expanded to help his changing needs over the years. It now includes support from the medical team at Westmead Children’s Hospital – Neurologist, Cardiologist, Nephrologist, Endocrinologist plus the local Paediatrician and his therapy team – OT, Speech Therapy, Psychology, Music Therapy, One Culture Support Services and Riding for the Disabled.

Oliver also participates in the Global TSC Biometrics Database study via the TSC Alliance in the United States.

Oliver was started early on epilepsy medication as a baby As he has gotten older his medications have been adjusted and added to as part of his seizure control management plan. Seizures still occur, but are rare, and we now have an app to record any activity.

We have continued to ensure that Oliver is exposed to new things and places to encourage his development. At 12 years of age he is a seasoned traveller having been to places like Alaska, Canada, and the Caribbean. He also loves his sports, including watching the Central Coast Mariners, Sydney Swans, Anaheim Ducks and Los Angeles Angels. In most respects, Oliver is just a typical 12 year old – with all the attitude that comes with that!
