TSC Research Trials in Australia

Sincere thanks to TSC international for making it possible for TSA to participate in a joint patient organisation, clinicians and industry forum last week. There were some really thoughtful and productive discussions about improving the process for prioritizing and conducting research trials for TSC. The consensus priorities and actions are now being written up.

The good news is that 3 of the industry partners at the forum are interested in working to include Australia in upcoming trials. These would be for: a selected, more targeted mTOR inhibitor drug to treat patients with TSC refractory epilepsy; a long term safety study of a treatment for developmental and epileptic encephalopathy and a proof of concept trial for a new epilepsy drug.

TSA will work with industry partners and health care professionals to progress these trials in Australia and will keep you posted. Do bear in mind though that the timeline to get new trials underway can be lengthy due to the ethics and other protocols that need to be met.
