TAND stands for TSC Associated Neuropsychiatric Disorders and refers to the wide range of cognitive, behavioural and mental health challenges that people with TSC are at risk of. For many people with TSC the TAND aspects of TSC are of greater concern to them and their families than the medical aspects of TSC.
TAND includes many interrelated areas including aggressive behaviors, autism spectrum disorders, intellectual disabilities, developmental delay, depression and anxiety disorders, as well as difficulties experienced at school and at work.
Regular surveillance of all people with TSC is recommended to identify challenges early and seek help to minimise their impact. The TAND checklist is a new screening tool to be used by health professionals in conjunction with the person with TSC and/or their carers to do this surveillance.
We will be sharing more information about the TAND checklist and including a copy in the April 2015 issue of Reach Out. You can receive a paper copy of Reach Out by joining TSA or making a monthly donation.
