In this issue of Research Round Up we have focused on recent research on TAND, TSC Associated Neuropsychiatric Disorders.

TAND Clusters

At TSA's TAND+ Conference in November, Professor Petrus de Vries presented on TAND and talked about his team's recent work identifying TAND levels and TAND clusters. The TAND clusters are:

  • Scholastic
  • Neuropsychological
  • Dysregulated behaviour
  • Overactive/impulsive
  • Eat/sleep
  • Mood/anxiety
  • Autism spectrum disorder-like

The (very clever and very complex) means by which the team identified the TAND clusters is detailed in this recent paper: Multivariate data analysis identifies natural clusters of Tuberous Sclerosis Complex Associated Neuropsychiatric Disorders (TAND) | Orphanet Journal of Rare Diseases | Full Text (biomedcentral.com)

For those who would like to know about TAND, including TAND levels and TAND clusters, the presentation by Professor Petrus de Vries is available on our website by clicking here.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and TAND

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is one of the most common TAND diagnoses, with previous research showing 30-50% of individuals with TSC meet the criteria for ASD, compared to 2% for the general population.

This study looked at developmental and behavioural features in infants with TSC by the time they were 36 months of age which might indicate higher suspicion for ASD.
